ChatGPT Introduces UPI Payments in India Through BigBasket Pilot
OpenAI has taken a big step in transforming how we shop online. ChatGPT has now started testing UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payments in India through a pilot project with BigBasket, one of India’s leading online grocery platforms.
This update allows users to buy products directly within ChatGPT — without visiting any website or app. The AI chatbot now not only helps you find information but also helps you shop and pay through a simple conversation.
How It Works
Users can simply ask ChatGPT to order something — like “Buy fresh vegetables from BigBasket.” The AI then:
Searches BigBasket’s product catalog,
Suggests options,
Confirms your order, and
Uses UPI to make the payment — all inside the chat window.
This makes online shopping faster, simpler, and smarter than ever before.
Who’s Involved in the Pilot
The initiative is a collaboration between OpenAI, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and fintech company Razorpay.
Banks like Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank are also participating to test how conversational AI interacts securely with India’s powerful real-time payment system.
🛒 BigBasket Leads the Way
BigBasket, owned by the Tata Group, is the first retail partner for this pilot program.
According to Preeti Jain, Head of Product & Design at BigBasket, this integration is a major shift in how people shop online.
“We are empowering customers with a shopping journey that is truly seamless — including intuitive product discovery, secure payments, and near-instant delivery, all inside a simple conversation,” said Jain.
